Netflix and the English language

One of the joys of "watch instantly" on Netflix is that I have been able to enjoy a constant stream of 30 Rock episodes these last few days. Suddenly my vocabulary consists of phrases like, "what the what?", "nerds", "oh blurg", "that's a deal breaker", and "shut it down"...Add those to my already weird vocabulary of "oh Moses", "you monkey", and "legit"....

Basically I'm saying the older I get the more my English is digressing...Shouldn't it be the other way around????

busy bees

we've been busy the last couple of days. Taste of Chicago, Pool, park, more Taste of Chicago, more pool...Busy busy busy.

On the health front: Benson and I are starting to feel better. Yes, that's right, 4 weeks later we're finally starting to feel better...wow.

On the weather front: the last few days have been perfection. Mid 70s, low humidity, blue skies...it's paradise here. Go figure!

On the project front: I'm updating our guest room. I've been shopping for random stuff at Goodwill to save money, and I've been finding some real gems. I've been crafting all week--spraying painting furniture, making book wreaths, etc. fun times.

On the Josh front: He's a true busy bee. Between work, his church calling, and his family he has no time to rest. He's such a good sport about it all too. I'm a lucky lady.

Overall, life is good and we're keeping ourselves entertained.

High Hopes

Josh and I had high hopes for this place when we went on our date night a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment. Their main problem???? Don't let your customers watch you taking their "meal" out of a fridge and microwave it...AND THEN have it STILL take 30 minutes to get the food.

Seriously, I could see into the kitchen. They didn't cook ONE thing fresh for us. And we were the only people in the restaurant, its not like they were busy...So sad...This place had good reviews and everything. Too bad...

Thank goodness I have the TASTE OF CHICAGO to look forward to this week to make up for this bummer dining experience...

Josh was being silly taking random pictures...

Official haircut

I don't know why I'm even posting these pictures because they don't do justice to the actual haircut, but I am...

Anyways, Benson had his 1st official haircut on Wednesday. We took him to Kutting Edge Kids near our home, plopped him down in an airplane, and away the scissors went...The stylist took an inch off the back and a 1/2 inch off the rest. It really does look cute, but the pictures I took of the momentous event are on another camera...even better, I can't find the adapter for the camera so I can't upload the pictures...So, sorry, but this is as good as it's going to get...

True to being Ben, he was NOT happy sitting in that airplane having water squirted on his face and hair and being told to hold still. He whimpered and cried the whole time. I, of course, laughed and snapped pictures because it was just so classic. Poor kid's going to be scarred. But at least he can see out of his eyes now--no more hair obstructing the view--and I no longer have to tell people he's a boy not a girl...and best yet??? He still looks like my little monkey...I love this little man!

couple more

This was Josh putting Benson in the net thingy at the Children's Museum...For an explanation, see story in yesterday's post...as you can see he didn't seem too thrilled with the idea...

Benson climbing in the Dinosaur room. He loves exploring, and climbing....

Chicago Children's Museum

Last Saturday, Josh, Ben, & I met up with Josh's aunt Sharon (who was visiting from California) and his cousin, Joy, and her family (Greg, Riley, Carter, & Landon) who just moved here!!!! We now have family from Josh's side living close! We love it! It was a fun day.

Benson thought this was a real person giving him a ride on the wooden car. He couldn't figure out why the person wouldn't turn around and say hi!

Dressing up as a spider and exploring the town.

Riding around showing Daddy the sights...

Pulling Daddy to the next fun adventure...we couldn't move fast enough for this kid!

This was an adventure that Daddy wanted Benson to do. The only problem??? This was for kids 5 years and older. Poor Ben was 30 feet up in the air and he was stuck in this net...Josh had to climb in and rescue him because he kept getting stuck.
Daddy sometimes forgets that Benson is still a little guy....That's all right though, he survived, he didn't cry, and we still had a great day!

Just a random video of us at the park. Don't ask me why I allowed myself to go out in public looking the way I did, sometimes it just happens.

Ps- To clarify my sickness. It's a REALLY bad chest cold. I've had it off and on for three weeks now...no fun. Benson has the same thing. gross.

17 months and counting

Our little man is another month older. Crazy! He's so much fun! I had big plans to go to the pool today and head to Target for some stuff, but alas, I am sick. R.E.A.L.LY. sick. lovely.

So, sorry to the blogging world for lack of a better post, I'm just too tired and too sick to even think, and to Benson, sorry for not being a better mom today.

Thanks to Josh for being an amazing father and husband....He came home early today to help me out. What a lucky girl I am to be married to such an amazing boy!

Seriously!?!?!?? Let the man get his wife to the hospital!!!!!

Newlywed Arrested After Rushing Wife to Hospital

Updated: 4 hours 54 minutes ago

Erin O'Neill

(June 20) -- When a newlywed cancer survivor with a heart condition started showing stroke symptoms, her husband knew he needed to get her to the hospital immediately. Now, the new groom faces a felony charge from an encounter with a police officer he says delayed his wife's access to treatment.

Just married last week, Eric and Aline Wright of Chattanooga, Tenn., both medical professionals at Erlanger Medical Center, were enjoying what was supposed to be their honeymoon when Aline's speech became slurred and her face began to droop on Wednesday. During the ride to the hospital, Eric says he stopped at two red lights but ran them both. After passing through the second red light, a police cruiser pulled behind the couple's vehicle, following it with lights and sirens on to the hospital.

Eric, a trained medic who served two tours in Iraq, said he knew getting Aline to medical care as quickly as possible was critical and at first felt glad when the officer pulled in behind them.

Eric said he reasoned that instead of pulling over and wasting time explaining the medical emergency in a potentially life-or-death situation, he could have that conversation with the officer at the hospital. "As long as my wife gets into the hospital and gets taken care of then we can talk about things like red lights," he told AOL News.

But, according to Eric's account, Chattanooga Officer Jim Daves blocked Eric, who was carrying Aline, a left-leg amputee, from immediately entering the hospital.

"I remember having to stop. I was trying to explain the situation, but he didn't really stop to listen. He never asked what her condition was," said Eric. "I remember having to step around him to get in to the emergency room."

According to WATC NewsChannel 9, the officer's written affidavit says, "Defendant stopped in the ER entrance and jumped out and ran. Police made contact with Defendant at the passenger side of his vehicle and I grabbed the Defendant's arm and he pushed me away scraping my arm with his fingernail. Defendant yelled and said it was an emergency..."

The officer further wrote, "Defendant pushed through the crowd and carried a female back into the emergency room and place[d] her in a room with no permission of the hospital staff."

Eric denies those allegations.

"I never had any contact with the officer at all," he said. Furthermore, he says, he called the emergency room to alert them of the situation and let them know he would be arriving.

Eric said after he entered the hospital, the officer tried to come into the area where Aline was being treated, interrupting her care.

"At that point it was crucial I be present," Eric told AOL News, saying his wife was unable at the time to accurately relay the advancement of her symptoms and her medical history.
Aline Wright, believed to be having a stroke, says an officer with the Chattanooga Police Department blocked her husband from taking her to the emergency room at Erlanger Wednesday night.

Eric and Aline Wright say a Chattanooga, Tenn., police officer prevented Aline from reaching medical treatment as quickly as possible when she was showing signs of a stroke.

The officer allegedly told Eric later that he would be charged with a felony and needed to turn himself in to police. The new groom went to Hamilton County Jail on Thursday and was told there was no warrant out for his arrest.

The couple thought that the ordeal was over.

"But apparently it wasn't. I was awakened abruptly by people coming in the room," on Friday, Aline told WRCB. Eric was arrested and charged with assault on police, disorderly conduct, reckless endangerment, a felony count of evading arrest and other traffic violations, according to a Chattanooga police blotter.

A police spokeswoman told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that there was a supervisory complaint filed against the officer after the incident. The officer's supervisor reviewed the complaint, determining that "no policy violations, rules or procedures or laws were broken," the spokeswoman told the paper. Calls by AOL News for comment from the department have not been returned.

Eric is out on $7,500 bail. A court date is scheduled for July 9. Eric said he has been suspended from the hospital because of the felony charge, though he hasn't been convicted. A message left with the hospital's public relations department has not yet been returned.

"It's definitely a financial burden to me and my wife," said Eric, who added the couple may consider filing a civil suit. "This is really going to end up costing me and my wife thousands of dollars."

The beginning!
I look quite awkward in this action shot, but I'm posting it anyways. It's motivation to get a tan and lose the arm flab.

My turn

Well, I decided to follow in my cute husband's footsteps and run my own 5K. I didn't train for it--it was a last minute thing, but that's okay! I finished in 29 minutes. I had fun! I'm really glad I did it and now I have a base time that I can try and beat next time. It was definitely slow starting out. It takes forever to get up to a good pace because there is just a huge mass of people. So, next time, I'm going to fight my way to the front of the line to make sure I don't get stuck behind a crowd. Anyways, I had fun!!!! Time to sign up for the next one!

Printer's Row Book Fair

Yesterday was the Printer's Row Book Fair. It was only a couple blocks from our house, so we decided to stop by. There was a "kid" section where they did live concerts and skits for the little ones. Benson had a blast!

He LOVED the giant piece of chalk!
He also loves the Chalk Rake. So fun!
But I think his FAVORITE part was the lollipop he won. Yummy!

the random...

Benson doesn't seem very happy in this picture, but I'm pretty much posting every picture I take these days. The good, the bad, the random...
Another view of the baby shower. This picture was taken by a friend. It sort-of shows the candy tables and food tables in the background.
I found this picture on Josh's computer. It's Benson's with his great-grandpa "Grampy" Fred.
The girls I threw the shower for--Sarah in the white and Pamela in the red.

Happy birthday, Ryan!

It's my nephew's 4th birthday today! Hope he has a great day!!!!! We love and miss you, Ryan!!! We can't wait to see you in July at the family reunion!

Blocked

So, I don't know if this happened to anyone else but I was blocked out of Blogger for over 24 hours. I guess there was an issue with "certain regions in the US" and people couldn't access their accounts. So, sorry for the lack of post today, but I'm just now allowed back on.

The main post I was GOING to do yesterday was a birthday post for my mother-in-law, Cathy. It was her 28th birthday ;) yesterday! We're sorry we missed it, but we're sure it was a great one!

Cathy, thanks for all you do for us. You're an amazing example to me and to Josh & Benson. You love your family so much and it shows in everything you do. Thanks for the love and kindness you've always shown me. I've always felt like a daughter, and that has made a big impact on me.

Happy birthday! We hope this is the best year yet. See you sometime :) Come visit!

Love,

Kiera (and Josh & Benson)

a double baby shower

I hosted a baby shower for my friends, Sarah and Pamela, on Saturday. Sarah is having her 1st boy and Pamela is having her 1st girl. So, I picked the colors, turquoise, raspberry and yellow. I got the color palette idea and the napkin ring idea from Hostess with the Mostess.
I ran out of space on my camera so I didn't get a ton of pictures, but others did so I'm waiting for copies from them. Originally the Shower was going to be outside in our backyard, but it rained yesterday so we brought it inside. It worked out great. It was tons of fun! A special thanks to my friend, Heather, for all of her help. And thanks to Julie, Ashley, and Sarah for helping with some of the odds and ends.
oh and since it's my blog I'm going to be bragging about all of the stuff we did for it...So, if thinly-veiled narcissism isn't your thing, don't read this post.
Here's the "yellow" lemonade table.
Heather helped dip the strawberries in yellow-colored chocolate. I bought the lemonade jug at Costco for $25. It's awesome. The yellow runners were courtesy of my sister-in-law, Emily and her mom. They were used at her wedding last month and they mailed them out to me to use for the shower! THANK YOU!
Here was the "raspberry" candy table. I made the pink paper Topiary (instructions from heatherbailey.com). The square pink cakes were melted pink frosting over angel food cakes. The pretzels were dipped in pink chocolate. I bought the pink yogurt-dipped raisins from Aldi as well as the sour candy straws. The assorted candy was purchased at Costco. All of the candy vases were either borrowed or purchased from Hobby Lobby for 50% off! I love good deals!

The "turquoise" candy table. Once again, I made the blue paper topiary. Heather dipped the blue-chocolate strawberries. The blue candy sticks and blue taffy were courtesy of my sister-in-law, Emily & her mom. They were left over from her wedding last month! Thanks! The blue chocolates were on clearance at Aldi. I made the blue table runner from a Badgley Mischka tablecloth I purchased from Marshall's.

The main food table! We had chicken croissant sandwiches, pasta salad, assorted cheeses and crackers, vegetables and dip, and fruit and dip. It was all yummy, if I do say so myself :)
Here were the tables! once again, the yellow runners were borrowed and I made the blue runners. We bought the table and chairs from Craigslist--smokin' deal, and the white tablecloths were borrowed from my mom-thanks!!! I made the triangle paper banners (there were two more hanging in different parts of the room) and my sister used her CriCut to cut out letters saying, "welcome all" and "double baby shower" which I glued to the banners.

The centerpieces--I bought all of the tall vases from Hobby Lobby for $1 each! The small vases were borrowed form my mom. I made the raspberry-colored flowers ( I'll show how some other time. It took a lot of time, but that's all right!) and the daisies I bought from 50% off from Hobby Lobby and cut to the height I needed.

The napkins--I purchased yellow and turquoise dish towels from Marshall's and cut them in half. Then I had my friend, Ashley, and my sister, Katie, sew the cut edge and they became the napkins. The bonus is that they are the PERFECT size for placemats, so now I will use them for that purpose--love it!!!

The napkins rings--I made those by folding colored paper like you would a fan. Then you fold it in half, tape the end together forming a half circle. You then repeat with matching paper. You take the two half circle s and tape them together making the circle "fan". I then had friends help sew the paper ring to the "circle fan" part. (glue wouldn't work). Then I bought craft balls and glued them to the top of the "fan" part.

Another view of the centerpieces.

The prizes. I had 4 games that we played (no pictures of those, sorry!) I did "Guess the size of Pamela and Sarah's bellies", we did a "Baby Food Word Scramble", "Guess the baby food"--I had 8 jars of baby food and they had to guess what each one was without tasting it. and the 4th game was "Baby Item Memory Game"-I had 15 baby items in a basket and they had to try and remember what the items were.
Here were the prizes. I made these. The idea came from my parent's stake young women's. They made a bunch of these to sell for Mother's day to raise money for Girl's camp.
So, I bought the glass from Hobby Lobby, of course for 50% off. My mom gave me the white paper stuff and I bought the mini-candies. It's super easy, just stuff the bottom half of the glass with candy, put the white paper in, tape a foam ball (that's been cut in half) to the white paper. Then I hot-glued the mini candies to the foam ball. I then put a little hot glue on the top edge of the glass jar to help glue the top so it wouldn't fall off. I cute a straw and glued that in too. I think they turned out great, but I'm biased.

Random centerpiece pictures.

Sarah and Heather--sorry I got the back of your head, Heather!

Another picture of the food table.

Pamela and Sarah opening some of the gifts at the end.

The clean-up. It's been a slow process. It's weird because I've spent the last 3 + weeks doing a bunch of stuff for the party and now it's over. I guess I need a new project!

A new home for the flowers.

More clean-up.

It was fun. Thanks again to everyone who helped out! I hope Sarah and Pamela had a good time because I had fun doing it. And once again, sorry for bragging! It was just a lot of fun.
